Physics AS/A2 Level at Huish Episcopi Science College

Course description

If you are thinking about your future and it includes a career with a scientific element, then Physics could figure in your options for Year 12. Physics is seen as a preferred subject for many degree courses and there is currently a shortage of trained scientists.

Course content

The new A level specification gives a more streamlined progression through units and is appropriate for learners of varying aptitude. Learners build on their GCSE knowledge and are given lots of opportunity to develop practical skills. The notion of 'how science works' is integrated throughout the course, along with contemporary topics.

Focuses on Mechanics (15%) in the first term followed by Electrons, Waves and Photons (25%) in the summer term. There will also be formally assessed practical investigations (10%) that will be run throughout the AS course.

Follows on from the AS with a greater insight into some of the more advanced areas of physics. The first term will be looking at the Newtonian World (15%) and then followed by Fields, Particles and Frontiers of Physics (25%). Both of these sections will include 10% of synoptic material covered at AS. And as with AS there will be formally assessed practical investigations (10%) to complete the full A level.
The specifications in Physics are intended to encourage students to:
1. Develop essential knowledge and understanding in Physics and, where appropriate, the applications of Physics and the skills needed for its use in new and changing situations.
2. Develop an understanding of the link between theory and experiment
3. Appreciate how Physics has developed and is used in present day society.
4. Show the importance of Physics as a human endeavour which interacts with social, philosophical, economic and industrial matters.
5. Recognise the quantitative nature of Physics and understand how mathematical expressions relate to physical principles.

Entry requirements

Assessment will be by two written examination papers at both AS and A2 as well as internal assessment of practical investigative skills.

Future opportunities

Almost anywhere! Physics A Level is one of the most respected A Levels by employers (source: The Independent). It is an excellent route into employment or university. Suitable for careers such as: Medicine, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering (Aeronautical, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil). Philosophy, Mathematics, Airline pilots. MOD. The list goes on!! The career opportunities available are as vast as the subject itself due, in part, to the transferable skills gained whilst studying Physics.
