Graphic Communication at Reepham High School and College

Course description

Graphic Communication is highly relevant to the changing nature and methods of communication in contemporary society. Over 62% of design businesses in the UK work in communications design making it by far the largest component of the design industry (Design Council 2010).


A career as a graphic designer can take many different flavours because graphic design touches so many areas of visual output. Graphic designers work with type, colour, patterns, illustration, photography, information and physical materials to create everything from annual reports to corporate logos, from maps and diagrams to album and book covers, from product packaging to digital interfaces - and much more besides. Some designers work independently, others for international consultancies.


This popular A Level is a practical course with an emphasis on learning by doing, that allows you to creatively solve problems using a whole range of different media, techniques and processes. In the first year you will produce a portfolio of coursework selected by you and for the externally-set assignment you will create ideas in response to one of the five exciting starting points you will be given. In the second year you will be able to continue to create more in-depth coursework and you will be given another externally-set assignment to create ideas in response to one of the eight exciting starting points.


This A Level will help you to build a portfolio of work should you wish to study to degree level in Graphic Communication, Graphics, Illustration, Image Manipulation, Animation, Games Art & Design, Product Design, Retail & Interior Design and Architecture opening the door to many exciting and rewarding career opportunities.

Entry requirements

You will need at least 5 GCSEs at grade C or above including English or Mathematics and have to meet the minimum entry requirements for each subject. Grade ā€˜Cā€™ in Art/Technology related subject and English
