Sport & Exercise Sciences BTEC Level 3 Diploma at West Herts College

Course description

This course is ideal if you have an interest in all aspects of sport. You will cover topics ranging from participation in different sports to the different methods of enhancing performance. You will also explore how sport can benefit society as a whole.

Course content

You’ll study how science can be applied to understanding and improving sports performance. Central to this is knowledge of human biology, including the structures of the human body and how it functions.

Subjects focusing on sports performance include psychology, nutrition and injury. Skills for assessing fitness and coaching sports are developed, as are more general skills needed to work in the sports industry.

This course is different to the Extended Diploma in Sport due to the more scientific nature of the subjects studied, which include:

  • Exercise anatomy

  • Exercise physiology

  • Psychology for sport

  • Practical sport performance

  • Sports massage

There will be opportunities to improve your English and maths and take part in GAP work placements. It’s also possible to gain coaching awards.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs (A*-C), including English or maths, and science – PE also desirable, or a relevant Level 2 Diploma. You will also be required to attend a course introduction meeting.

Future opportunities

Career opportunities straight from college include roles as a sports assistant in sports coaching or sports development as well as many other positions in sports-related areas.

You can progress to the Foundation degree in Sport Studies or Active IQ qualification. Alternatively, you can study PE and Leisure Management or specialised degrees such as Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation, Sports Equipment Design, Diet and Nutrition or Sports Psychology.
