Course description

The opportunity for people working in the Health and Social Care sectors is growing at a fast pace.

This one year course provides the basis for the skills needed to be successful in this area of work. 

Health and Social Care is very popular and successful here at Farnham College.

There is a lot of contact with professionals working in the health and social care sectors and with children.

You should have an interest in Health and Social Care. You enjoy communicating with a range of people and would like to make a difference to people's lives in a positive way. You want to learn skills that you can transfer to a range of professions later on.
 

Course content

Topics include

  • developing good communication skills
  • understanding the rights and needs of people you may work with
  • maintaining a safe environment whilst encouraging independence
  • importance of a healthy diet
  • development in all the life stages
  • and how to provide therapeutic and creative activities for people you may care for.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grade D or above, including Maths and English. You will also need a clear enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, which you are required to pay for at the start of the course.

 

Assessment

Teachers will set assignments throughout the course. These may take the form of projects , presentations, written work or research assignments. The important thing will be to evidence your skills and knowledge learnt to date.

 

Future opportunities

This BTEC qualification is intended to introduce you to working in the Health & Social Care sector or prepare you for further study, such as a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma.

Further information

All 16-19 year olds on full-time programmes will be required to retake GCSE English and Maths or to undertake Functional Skills, if they have not already attained the equivalent of a GCSE grade C in these subjects, every year of their course, until they complete their studies.
