BTEC Performing Arts at The Thetford Academy

Course description

GENERAL AIMS: BTEC Performing Arts is a Level 3

qualification. It is vocational and aims to prepare students

for the practical nature of the Performing Arts industry.

The course extends and expands the knowledge of

different types of performance work. Students are

required to work together to form their own performance

company and manage all aspects of performance.

COURSE OUTLINE: Subsidiary Diploma in

Performing arts (One A Level Equivalent).

n Core 1 - Performing to an Audience: The aim of this

unit is to give learners experience of performing a role

as part of an ensemble presenting rehearsed work to

a live audience in an appropriate vocational setting.

n Core 2 - Principles of Acting: In this unit learners

will study the key principles of acting. These will be

explored mainly through practical workshops, tutorled

rehearsals and performances to a live audience.

n Specialist Additional Units include: Applying Acting

Styles, Theatre in Education, Theatre for Children,

Rehearsing Performing, Diploma in Performing Arts (Two A

Level; Equivalents), Performance Workshop, Performing Arts

Business, Developing Physical Theatre, Applying Physical

Theatre, Storytelling as Performance, Auditions for Actors.

n Core unit 1 - Performing Arts Business:

In this unit, you will explore the nature of the industry,

researching the range of jobs on offer, training

requirements; how the performing arts is funded and how

to plan and manage a practical performance budget.

n Core unit 2 - Performance Workshop:

As a group, you will devise 2 performance pieces

on a theme and a script chosen by your drama

teacher. You will perform the work, showcasing

your performance skills in the studio theatre.

NATURE OF STUDY: The BTEC Performing Arts course is

a blend of theory and practical learning. Students will

be expected to keep an evaluative portfolio, conduct

research, lead workshops and participate in several devised

and scripted performances. Students will study various

theatre practitioners and a range of play texts and genres.

Entry requirements

Sixth Form Entry

Year 12

A Levels

5 A*-C at GCSE, including a C in English + Mathematics,

with a B grade in the chosen subject areas for A Level.

BTEC Level 3

4 A*-C, preferably including a C in English + Mathematics.

BTEC Level 2

2 D grades.

Year 13

Each student’s work is reviewed at the end of

Year 12 and progress into Year 13 is dependent on

satisfactory performance in the examinations.
