IT User Skills (Level 1) (Diploma) at New College Swindon

Course description

This course will give you a wide-ranging introduction to the efficient and effective use of software.  It is a practical, hand-on course to develop the IT Skills required in the workplace.

Course content

Your course will include a range of different units including:

  • Using IT effectively units e.g. Using Email, Improving Productivity, etc
  • Use of software units, e.g. Word-processing, Spreadsheets, etc
  • Creative software units, e.g. Multimedia Software, Website Software, etc
  • Projects, creating publications, etc

Entry requirements

You will need GCSE English Language and Mathematics at grade E or above.

You should enjoy using software to create accurate documents and be able to follow written instructions.  Commitment to completing all units is essential.


Assessment is part of each unit and all assessment focuses on your IT skills.  You will be required to create products and publications for given scenarios.

Future opportunities

The Level 1 C&G Diploma in IT User Skills course will equip you for either the workplace or a related level 2 course, such as BTEC Information & Creative Technology.  At the end of the course you will have a qualification which is recognised by employers – the Level 1 ITQ Diploma.  You will have developed confidence and skills in a range of software.  You will be able to follow instructions to create documents according user requirements.
