Physics A Level at Philip Morant School and College

Course description

Physicists strive to understand the physical world and to discover the laws which govern its behaviour. It is the study of the interaction of matter and energy and extends from cosmology and the processes which keep stars burning, through electronics and optical materials, to nuclear reactions and sub-atomic particles.

Complementary Subjects

Physics fits in well with any of the other natural sciences and, while not absolutely essential at A Level, Mathematics is needed if considering studying Physics at university. Product Design, PE and Social Sciences can all combine well with Physics. People do not usually think of Physics as being associated with Art or English Literature, but to be good at those subjects requires a good imagination and “feeling” for the way ideas fit together, and that is a characteristic also of a good scientist.

  • Section 5: Electricity
  • Section 6: Further mechanics and thermal physics
  • Section 7: Fields and their consequences
  • Section 8: Nuclear physics
  • Section 9: Turning points in physics

Physics is arguably the most exciting and intellectually stimulating of the natural sciences. It is also the most basic, and underpins other sciences and engineering. A Level teaching at The Philip Morant College is based on a combination of lectures, practical work, small group teaching, seminars and problem-solving workshops

Entry requirements

Students must have at least:

  • Grade 7 in Maths
  • A (Grade 7) in GSCE Physics or
  • AA (Grade 7) in Core and Additional Science


Specification: AQA A Level Physics 7408

Three written exams (at the end of Yr 13):

  • Paper 1 will assess content from sections 1 to 6.
  • Paper 2 will assess content from sections 6 to 8 (with assumed knowledge from sections 1 to 5).
  • Paper 3 will assess practical skills and data analysis plus section 9.

Practical work is assessed within the written exams, with 15% of the total A Level marks allocated for practical knowledge and understanding.

A separate endorsement of practical skills requires students to undertake a minimum of 12 practical activities during the 2 year course. This practical work is assessed by teachers.

Future opportunities

The list of possible careers is endless. The most obvious are engineers and technicians of all kinds who need a sound background in Physics. Pharmacists; health and safety officers; yacht and boat designers; speech therapists; information scientists; climatologists; industrial designers; surgeons; technical writers and soil scientists are just some of the career options for an A Level physicist.
