A Level in Spanish at The Douay Martyrs School

Course description

Spanish is a prestigious subject which develops academic ability and practical language skills. It is valuable as a qualification for further language study and as a support for other subjects. Studying Spanish can give a European dimension to a professional career.


Independent study is essential to succeed in A-Level Spanish. Students are encouraged to keep abreast of current affairs by regularly reading Spanish newspapers and listening to the news broadcasts. Internet research tasks are central to the course. Students are also encouraged to study Spanish films and literature.



Course content

Course content is based on the following: Youth Culture and Concerns, Lifestyle, Health and Fitness, The World around us and Education and Employment allowing the students to gain an awareness of events and issues in Spain. Speaking presentations give the opportunity to research a topic of personal interest in-depth. This may be a literary topic or a reflection of other A-Level themed studies.

Entry requirements

Serious commitment is as important as GCSE grades. Preferably, you will have achieved a grade B at GCSE level.


Exam Board and Syllabus


AS Spanish 8SP091, Unit 1 6SP01, Unit 2 6SP02

A2 Spanish 9SP01, Unit 3 6SP03, Unit 4 6SP04


Assessment consists of 2 modules for AS Level and 2 modules for A2 Level. Two exam papers test integrated skills, of listening, reading and writing. There is a speaking test at AS and A2 level.

Future opportunities

A-Level or AS Level Spanish can be the key to an international career, whether as a language specialist or in another professional capacity. Many university courses in different subjects offer the opportunity to spend a term at a European university. The knowledge and skills acquired by language students are highly valued by employers and admissions tutors.
