Classical Civilisation AS OCR at Sandown Bay Academy

Course description

Course Overview: At AS, students are introduced to the archaeology and history of Bronze Age Greece along with the evidence presented in Homeric poetry. The modules studied at AS are archaeology and its techniques, these are applied to the history and literary sources of the Mycenaean Bronze Age, Homeric Society and Archaic Greece. At A2 level, students are introduced to the archaeology and history of Roman Britain and the Art and Architecture of Classical Greece. Assessment pattern: Endorsed AS Classical Civilisation requires students to be examined in Mycenaean Archaeology and Homer’s Odyssey. For Endorsed A2, 2 further modules in Greek Art and Roman Britain are required.

Entry requirements

No previous Classical knowledge or qualification is required, however, students are expected to have obtained 5 or more grade C or above at GCSE, including English.

Future opportunities

Post-18 Progression: All Degree courses accept A- level Classics. Students are highly appreciated and sought after for their depth of study, ability to handle textual criticism and aesthetic appreciation. This course goes well with all Arts subjects, including: English, History, Art as well as Science subjects. It develops critical analysis of archaeological artefacts, textual and aesthetic appreciation.
