English GCSE (AQA) at Ryburn Valley High School

Course description

This exciting and challenging course is based on the orders for the English National Curriculum. To do well, you will need to speak and listen to each other (20% of your marks), and you will have to produce a coursework folder containing : original writing, a prose study, and assignments on modern drama, Shakespeare and the media (20% of your marks). At the end of the two year course, you will take two final exams, the first of 1¾ hours and the second of 1½ hours’ duration. You will have to write about non-fiction and poetry, and you will produce your own writing e.g. persuasive and informative pieces. (This counts for 60% of your final marks).

Future opportunities

You could take this course to prepare for advanced level courses such as an A/AS Level in English or you may need to strengthen your grades by completing a foundation or intermediate vocational qualification.With further training, you could go into a job related to English such as a Teacher, Journalist or Editor. You could also go straight into employment and do further training or part time study with the support of your employer.
