Photography A-Level at Bristol Brunel Academy

Course description

Use Photoshop, Nikon SLR cameras and the studio. Enjoy an experimental course and explore a wide range of processes to explore your ideas. Be inspired by studying other photographers work.

Course content

Year 1
  • Unit 1: Portfolio of work including small projects such as -exploring emotions in portraiture, a self portraiture project incorporating a mixed media approach and industrial structures. This unit also includes an extended project. 
  • Unit 2: EST (Externally set task) from exam board. Where pupils will create a project in response to a chosen theme from the paper.
Year 2
  • Unit 3: Self directed project with written essay to support work on a genre of your choice. 
  • Unit 4: EST (Externally set task) from exam board. Where pupils will create a project in response to a chosen theme from the paper.

Entry requirements

B grade in GCSE Photography or Art.

Minimum Academic Standard for Progression into Y13

Entry into Y13 is not automatic in CLF Post 16.

The majority of students will continue into Y13 dependent on the entry criteria for courses as outlined below:

For A levels, all students must attain a minimum academic standard of passing all subjects with at least two D grades for successful progression in to Y13.

Supportive statements from subject teachers confirming suitability for continued study at A level. Following receipt of AS results, students who have met the entry requirements will be offered a place in Y13.

Students who do not meet the entry requirements into Y13 will be given guidance about a change of study programme and relevant courses available. They will not be allowed to re-sit the same core learning aims (i.e. subjects) as they did in Y12.

Assessment

All Units at both AS and A2 are internally marked and moderated with other academies and then externally moderated by the exam board.

Future opportunities

Progression

Students can go on to complete foundation diplomas in art and design or lens based media. They can also go onto study photography; illustration; fashion photography; graphic design; photo journalism; forensic photography at university.

Careers

Fashion photographer; magazine photographer; graphic designer; free lance photographer; photo journalism; a career within TV.
