Music AS/A at Ormskirk School

Course description

It is the aim of the department that the courses be both stimulating and rewarding with scope for individual interests and aptitudes. The course is suitable for those who wish to follow further studies in music at university or music college or for those who have a genuine interest in the subject and intend to pursue other options beyond A Levels. All students will receive individual advice and assistance with their work and are encouraged to use the facilities of the department in their study periods. There are two well-equipped music rooms, a practice room, an A Level teaching room with a large range of books, musical scores and CD’s the department contains 25 PC’s with Sibelius and Cubase software and a recording studio with a 24 channel Maci Desk. SPECIFIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS - Music: GCSE Grade B or above or Grade V Theory/Practical. Opportunities for Progression to HE Careers, Music Teaching NB: Primary School Teachers with Music as a subject are sought after, Recording Engineers, Music Therapy - how music helps those with difficulties in communicating, ie mental illness/physical care Army/Bands Music Journalism/Critic, critical analysis of recorded music Composing for TV or film.

Future opportunities

You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Music, which could lead onto higher education to study Music related courses or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to Music such as a Music Composer, Musician, Sound Technician or you may wish to use your music ability for recreational purposes. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will provide you with the skills, understanding and knowledge to access a music related career or seek employment in lots of other industries.
