Childcare & Education (Early Years Educator) Level 3 Diploma (CACHE) at East Surrey College

Course description

The Early Years Education and Care (Early Years Educator) CACHE Level 3 Diploma prepares students to become Early Years educators, enabling them to work with children from birth to 5 years and gain knowledge of children aged 5-7 years. Upon achievement of this qualification it is intended that students will be able to enter the workforce as early years educators or access higher education (with the appropriate UCAS points).

Course content

There are 15 Units that are covered over a 2 year course, with topics relating to childcare and education.
This programme incorporates experience within in a real work environment which is an integral part of the course and takes place in an early years setting for a minimum of 2 days per week plus block assessment weeks.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs grade A*-C, which must include Maths and English, or a Level 2 Diploma, with GCSEs or Functional Skills including Maths and English, and a clean DBS. Positive references from school regarding behaviour, attendance and punctuality. Vocational work placement.
 
Childcare courses are designed to equip students with the skills needed to look after children. Therefore, it is important to be emotionally balanced and resilient to cope with challenging situations and the demands of working within the childcare sector. You will need to be creative, enthusiastic and enjoy working with children.

Assessment

Assessment is in the form of 15 Unit assignments, an effective practice study task and an extended assessment task, together with direct observation of practical skills and knowledge in a real work environment.
 

Financial information

If you are under 19 on 31/08/2016, tuition is free. If you are 19 or over please consult Client Services for advice and guidance on funding and eligibility.
 
Please be aware that a DBS check must be obtained at a fee of £45.00, and there may be additional costs for equipment and educational visits. This information will be available from the curriculum staff at interview.

Future opportunities

Employment as a professional early years educator, classroom learning support assistant, nanny, child-minder, or play worker, or progress to higher education studying subject areas such as early years teaching, nursing, midwifery, social work, or a degree of your choice. You can also consider joining our part-time Foundation Degree in Early Years Care & Education.

 Text books
 Stationery – USB, ring binder, dividers, pens, paper, plastic wallets etc
 Access to IT an advantage
 Uniform – college polo shirt, fleece (optional). You will also be expected to wear appropriate trousers/skirt and shoes. Childcare students need to be aware that excessive jewellery and nail extensions are not appropriate to the industry.
