Welding - Level 1 Manual Metal Arc Welding at Calderdale College
Level 1 Manual Metal Arc (MMA) Welding is a foundation course for learners wanting a practical, hands on learning experience that will lead to a nationally recognised qualification. It is a great place to start for anyone wanting to pursue a career in fabrication/welding, and a useful skill to have for many other careers in engineering and motor vehicles. You will learn the fundamentals of MMA welding, how to correctly set up your plant and the proper procedures to prepare your materials. You will develop your ability to work with hand tools, power tools. You will learn to weld different joints so that you will be able to apply your skills to different tasks. In addition to the main qualification you will also have opportunity to develop other skills such as MIG welding and motor vehicle mechanics that will help broaden the range of career opportunities available to you. You will also have opportunity to take part in outdoor, enrichment and sporting activities.
The bulk of this qualification is delivered in the workshop environment. In addition to learning the practical aspects of different welds and how to use the equipment you will be taught how to work safely and effectively. With the support of experienced tutors you will learn how to accurately measure, mark and cut. There is some theory to be learnt, most of this is done through completion of practical activities and discussion with your course tutor.
At the start of your course we would expect you to complete an initial assessment to determine your current level of maths and English, this will help us to ensure that you are the right course at the right level for you. It also helps us to plan your programme and to make sure that the right support is in place for you.
You would normally enrol on this qualification and combine it with other qualifications to build a complete study programme. Options are Level 1 Performing Engineering Operations, Entry Level 3 vehicle system maintenance or Entry Level 3 Vehicle Body and Paint Maintenance.
