Further Mathematics A level at Heathcote School & Science College

Course description

Further mathematics provides a chance for you to meet brand new mathematical concepts beyond the scope of the normal A-Level syllabus. It is both challenging and extremely interesting and serves as a perfect starting point for all those interested in pursuing Mathematics beyond Key Stage 5.

Course content

Further Mathematics at AS and A level is divided similarly to the standard Mathematics A Level -Core, Statistics, Mechanics and Decision. These are described on the Mathematics page. However Core Mathematics is replaced with Further Pure Mathematics:

Further Pure Mathematics

This builds upon algebraic, trigonometric, calculus and coordinate geometry from both GCSE and the Mathematics A-level whilst introducing whole new concepts within in these topics. Due to these completely fresh ideas the course is both exciting and challenging and gives the opportunity to see a lot of material that will be met early on in a Maths degree.

At AS, you will study Further Pure 1, Mechanics 1 and Statistics 2. For A2, you will study Further Pure 2, Statistics 3 and Mechanics 2.

The course is designed to run alongside both the AS and A level Standard Mathematics courses.

Entry requirements

To study Further Mathematics A level, you need to also study Mathematics A level.

You will also need 5 or more A*-C grades at GCSE, or equivalent, including at least a grade A in Mathematics GCSE.

Assessment

Just like the Mathematics course all of the units have equal weightings and each is assessed by a 90 minute exam. All modules are examined in June of their respective year (three in year 12 and three in year 13).

Future opportunities

Further Mathematics is designed as an extension of the Mathematics course and provides the chance to look at more complex and abstract Mathematical ideas. It is geared towards giving prospective Mathematics students a taster of some of the Maths they will enjoy at university.
