Product Design: Textiles at Fakenham Academy (College)

Course description

Textiles encompasses a vast range of fields including furniture, fashion packaging and engineering and is concerned with products that are both mass-produce and craft items. You will develop your ability to analyse and research into a need and apply creative and technological knowledge in innovative ways.

At AS in Unit 1 (Advanced Innovative Challenge) a theme will be set for you to research and investigate. You design, develop, model and then evaluate a solution. Unit 2 (Product Study) is a controlled assignment in which you select an existing product, identify weaknesses, then design, model and test possible improvements to it.

At A2 in Unit 3 (Design, Make and Evaluate) you will select a project of your own to develop a working prototype that can be tested and evaluated. Previous projects have included: outdoor seating, lighting, sports equipment, window dressings, couture fashion and accessories, advertising campaigns, point of sale displays and educational games to name but a few. Unit 4 (Product Design 2) covers your core knowledge of design techniques together with your material specialism. The second section tests your skills - you will respond to a given design situation and produce sketches and developments working towards a final proposal.
