Prelim Course Level 3 at The Corsham School

Course description

This is a one year course is a bridging the path to A Levels or BTEC Diplomas for those students who cannot access level 3 courses as they have not got five GCSEs at A* to C.

The students should have the ability to be successful at A Level in the future. We would look for indicators such as D grades in two or three subject as a measure of this.

Students with mainly F and G grades would be better suited to vocational options the colleges specialise in.

After a year of study on this course we would expect the students to have passed five GCSEs at A* to C and would therefore be able to access A Levels the following year. The course has flexibility in that if a student does have a B grade at GCSE it may be possible to do an A Level in that subject alongside GCSE courses, if this is felt to be appropriate. All students on the prelim course are fully integrated in all aspects of 6th Form life. They are on an equal footing with students in the same tutor group and all enjoy the social and sporting activities offered to the 6th Form.

Course content

The course comprises of five options. The GCSE options may change each year depending on staffing. However, Maths, English and three GCSE options will be available each year. We would expect students to improve their GCSE in Maths or English, or both, if that is the case, to get at least a C grade. The GCSEs on offer are potentially, and largely, new subjects which either have a vocational slant, eg Food Studies, IT, Photography or Film or are more “grown up” studies that should capture student’s interest, eg Sociology, Psychology and Business Studies. Students will be expected to be successful at these courses and gain at least a C grade and therefore have qualification to follow up these courses with A Levels in the next two years. We would expect students to access the study skills programme ‘Flying High’ to develop key skills such as note taking, précis, etc so that success at A Level becomes a stronger likelihood. If you would like further information on this programme of study, please contact Mr Bolter or Mrs Utton at the school.
