Sport Studies VTCT Diploma at John Taylor High School Academy

Course description

VTCT’s Diploma in Sports Studies is an applied general qualification that provides learners with the knowledge, understanding and skills to progress to Higher Education (HE) in a range of sports disciplines. This qualification is included on the UCAS Tariff and is formally recognised as being fit for purpose by HE institutions across the UK for entry onto sport and other related degree programmes.

Whilst the main purpose of this qualification is to support HE, it also may be used to support entry to, or progression within, sport and leisure employment.

Course content

8 mandatory units to be achieved: Analysing sports performance; Anatomy and Physiology for sport; Health screening and fitness testing; Lifestyle factors; Physiology of fitness; Risk assessment in sport; Sport in society; Sports leadership

4 optional units to be achieved from a wider range including Coaching in Sport; Individual Sports; Injuries in Sport; Instructing physical activity; Nutrition for Sport; Officiating in Sport; Organising Sports events; Research project for Sport and Exercise; Sports Psychology; Team sports.

Entry requirements

Grade 5 minimum GCSE English, Mathematics & Science. Having studied PE/Sport at KS4 would be of significant benefit. A commitment and interest in the subject, with the ability to specialise both in an individual and team sport.

Assessment

A minimum of 42% of the course is assessed via external exams. These units are indicated in bold above. All other units are assessed through externally set assignments that are internally marked and graded against specified assessment criteria. A grade will be awarded of either Fail, Pass, Merit or Distinction.

Future opportunities

Successful completion of the Diploma is equivalent to two A-Levels. This qualification has been developed to enable progression to HE to study a sports degree or other related degree programme which may include; Sports Studies, Sports Science, Sports Management, Sports Development, Sports Coaching and Leisure Management. Learners may also seek employment within the sport and active leisure sector or related industry.
