Further Mathematics at Bishop Luffa School

Course description

For AS Further Mathematics you have to take FP1 which is another “pure” unit but this involves lots of new and excitingconcepts such as complex numbers and Mathematical induction which are probably two of the most exciting and powerfulconcepts you will ever meet. If you want to prove that you can find the square root of a negative number or that all horses are the same colour or even that all men have one leg then this course is for you! You will also take D1 (decision maths) designed to solve real problems arising in modern commerceand industry. You will cover such enticing problems as “The Chinese Postman” and “The Travelling Salesman”. In addition you will take NM (numerical methods) which is a practical unit and includes some coursework involving the use ofspreadsheets.

For A2 Further Mathematics, taken in Year 13, you will take one more compulsory “pure” unit, FP2 and two other units whichare agreed by negotiation.

Entry requirements

You will need to have achieved an A* grade in Mathematics and have a strong overall GCSE profile. It is possible to study four AS Levels where two of them are AS Mathematics and AS Further Mathematics
