Media Studies A-Level at The Coleshill School

Course description

Students who have an interest in Media and how Media Products are made. It will make you aware of how they transmit overt and covert messages about the world to their audiences and how the media function as institutions. This course can lead you to applying for a wide range of Media courses, and future Media industry employment. The course teaches skills in analysis, independent research and writing a variety of documents, as well as practical media skills, and is therefore a useful entry qualification to many seemingly unrelated areas.

There is a focus on DSLR film making during AS and A2, ensuring that students develop skills relevant for the current media world.

Course content

Unit 1 Foundation Portfolio in Media

This is a coursework unit using professional software. Students will be asked to produce the opening scene and title sequence of an original film.

AS Level 50% A Level 25%

Unit 2 Key Media Concepts(TV Drama)

Textual analysis and representation. Analysis of an unseen moving image extract linked to aspects of representation within the sequence. Study of a specific media industry Analysis of the UK and Hollywood film industry.

AS Level 50% A Level 25%

Unit 3 Advanced Portfolio in Media

This is a coursework unit where students engage with contemporary media technologies to produce a media portfolio, including:

  • Research
  • Planning
  • Evaluation

A Level 25%

Unit 4 Critical Perspectives in Media

Theoretical evaluation of production. A study of the role that media plays in shaping our views of oursleves.

  • Externally assessed

A Level 25%

Entry requirements

Entry requirements to A Level Courses are 5 A* to C grades at GCSE including English and Maths.

Subject Specific

Grade C at Media Studies or equivalent similar programme of study is preferred


AS - One written paper in January, and a piece of coursework

A2 - One written paper in June, and a piece of coursework
