Course description

Unit 1 - Biology and Disease:
Lifestyle and disease; Digestion, proteins and enzymes;
Cell structure and cell membranes; Bacteria and intestinal
disease; Heart and heart disease; The immune system.
Unit 2 - The variety of living organisms.
Variation and diversity; DNA and cell division;
Biochemistry; Plant and animal cells, tissues and organs;
Gas exchange systems in animals; Water movement in
plants; Antibiotics and bacterial resistance; Species
diversity and evolution.
Unit 3 - Practical and Investigation Skills.
Investigating biological problems, collecting data
methodically and processing data using tables and graphs.
Explaining conclusions and understanding the limitations
of the methods used.
Unit 4 - Populations and environment:
Populations and ecosystems; Photosynthesis; Respiration;
Energy transfer; Nutrient cycles; Inheritance.
Unit 5 - Control in cells and in organisms:
Responses of organisms to the environment; Muscles;
Nervous system; Homeostasis; Menstrual cycle; DNA and
protein formation; Gene cloning and gene therapy; DNA
in medicine and genetic fingerprinting.
Unit 6 - Practical and Investigation Skills.
Investigating biological problems, collecting data
methodically. Demonstrating competence in manipulation
skills. Analyse data using the appropriate statistical test.

Entry requirements

Candidates will need to have at least 2 B grades inDouble Science or 2 B’s in Biology and Chemistry.
