What does AS/A2 specifications consist of and how they are assessed?AS Units % of AS A2 Units % of A2Unit 1: Performing • 5-6 min. performance• Solo and/or ensemble• Any instrument/style• Grade 5 standard repertoire 30% Unit 4: Extended Performance• 12-15 min. performance• Solo and/or ensemble• Any instrument/style• Grade 6 standard repertoire 30% Unit 2: Composing• 3 min. piece• Response to a brief from exam board• Written piece explaining your thought process/inspiration 30% Unit 5: Composition + Technical Study• 3 min. piece• Response to a brief from exam board• A technical study must be completed (a Bach chorale for SATB) 30%Unit 3: Developing Musical Understanding• Study set works from anthology• Identify musical features • Understand the social/historical context• Complete a Bach chorale (short passage for SATB) • Aural tests (listening for key features and identifying them in the exam)• 2 hour exam 40% Unit 6: Further Musical Understanding• Study set works from anthology• Identify musical features• Understand the social/historical context• Compare/contrast set works studied and be aware of how music has evolved.• Study of the History of Music and be able to identify the style and composer of unfamiliar pieces of music.• Complete a Bach chorale (short passage for SATB) • Aural tests (listening for key features and identifying them in the exam)• 2 hour exam 40%

A* to C GCSE in Music and/or Grade 5 qualification on instrument and theory

What might I use this qualification for?The Edexcel A Level course embraces so many different styles that students, who complete the course, become very open minded and well informed musicians. This then provides a great ‘springboard’ for Music in higher education.
