Applied Science BTEC Level 3 at Haslingden High School, Specialist Arts, Maths and Computing College

Course description

This subject is a work related learning course that mirrors working in science based industries or organisations. It develops scientific vocational skills where learners simulate or work towards employment as a working scientist/technician. Learner assignments are written with a work based scenario, for example, as lead geneticist for a biological research lab you are responsible for producing documentation which will inform other staff about procedures they will need to carry out.

Course content

- Unit 1: Principles and applications of science
- Unit 2: Practical scientific procedures and techniques
- Unit 3: Scientific investigation skills
- Unit 11: Genetics and genetic engineering

Entry requirements

Distinction at BTEC level 2 Applied Science or grade CC or better at GCSE Sciences

Assessment

This course is assessed through coursework assignments and examinations.

Future opportunities

A student who has studied this subject can progress to college or university to study science related programmes, for example, applied sciences, beauty therapy sciences, sports and exercise sciences, zoology.
