Painting & Decorating Construction Diploma Level 1 at Stephenson College

Course description

The Painting & Decorating Diploma is made up of six units. Candidates have to be successful in all six units to gain the Diploma.

Course content

Performing Painting & Decorating tasks of a non-complex nature, these include safe working practices, quantities and communicating with others, building methods and construction technology, basic painting & decorating skills. You will erect/dismantle access equipment and working platforms, prepare surfaces for decorating, apply paint systems by brush/roller, apply foundation and plain papers, and produce specialist decorative finishes. You will also learn functional skills which are English, Maths and ICT as required.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements, you will however need to attend an interview and undertake both diagnostic testing and the CITB Aptitude Test. This ensures your basic skills are at the appropriate level for this course.


Progressive assessments of all course elements by unit end tests are carried out on an individual basis. All assessments contribute towards course units, which will build for certification. Assessment includes an external test and an in college practical

The course will provide you with the necessary skills, training and knowledge to progress to the Painting & Decorating Diploma Level 2, become an Apprentice Painter or gain employment in the construction industry.
