BTEC First Diploma: Applied Science at Ashby School

Course description

This course examines the vocational applications of Science and explores how all three Sciences are linked to the workplace. Modules include an introduction to the basic principles of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Students also learn about the use of Science in the workplace, in environments such as laboratories and factories. There is also a module on forensic science, covering topics such as finger printing, DNA testing and blood group membership. As part of the course, students visit Twycross Zoo to see Science at work at first hand. The BTEC First Certificate is equivalent to four GCSEs at grades A* to C.

Teachers advise students on their suitability for this course.

Future opportunities

Possible careers include working as a laboratory technician or production line worker.Students can go on to study AS level Applied Science or a BTEC Higher qualification in Science. Some may opt for an apprenticeship in a Science-related field.
