# Mathematics A-Level at Daventry UTC

## Course description

All students will study a range of Core Mathematics, Mechanics and Statistics. Core Mathematics is the study of rigorous mathematical arguments using algebraic techniques which give learners an insight into major mathematical theories. Mechanics is the mathematical modelling of real-world situations. Statistics deals with the analysis of variable amounts of data which explain many everyday real-life phenomena.

## Course content

C1 and C2: Algebra and functions; coordinate geometry in the (x, y) plane; sequences and series; differentiation; integration; trigonometry; exponentials and logarithms; differentiation; integration.

C3 and C4: Algebra and functions; trigonometry; exponentials and logarithms; differentiation; numerical methods; coordinate geometry in the (x, y) plane; sequences and series; differentiation; integration; vectors.

M1 Mathematical models in mechanics; vectors in mechanics; kinematics of a particle moving in a straight line; dynamics of a particle moving in a straight line or plane; statics of a particle; moments.

S1 Mathematical models in probability and statistics; representation and summary of data; probability; correlation and regression; discrete random variables; discrete distributions; the Normal distribution.

## Entry requirements

Students will need to have achieved A*, A or B in GCSE Mathematics.

## Assessment

There are termly assessments and internal examinations throughout the course. Students are expected to match the five hours of work done inside the classroom with at least an equal amount of independent work outside of the lesson time.

The course will consist of six modules. Core Mathematics 1, Core Mathematics 2 and Mechanics 1 will be studied and examined in Year 12. These three modules form the AS qualification.

Core Mathematics 3, Core Mathematics 4 and Statistics 1 will be studied and examined in Year 13. This will lead to the full A Level in Mathematics. There is no coursework involved in any of the modules.
