BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma Health and Social Care (Health Studies) at Bournville College

Course description

This is a level 3 qualification which provides comprehensive knowledge and understanding of health and social care with a specialised emphasis on health care and health studies.

Course content

The qualification features, but is not limited to 9 core units, including:
Developing Effective Communication in Health and Social Care
Equality, Diversity and Rights in Health and Social Care
Health, Safety and Security in Health and Social Care
Development through the Life Stages
Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care
Personal and Professional Development in Health and Social Care
Public Health
Physiology of Fluid Balance
Physiological Disorders

You will also study a number of optional units alongside the core modules.

For the duration of the course you will spend one day each week in work placement. Over the two years, most students attend three different placements in order to gain a variety of experiences. Whilst in placement you will build a portfolio of evidence which will include activity plans, reflective accounts, supervisor reports and reports of tutor visits.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs A*-C including English, maths and science
Potential students will also be interviewed to assess their suitability for a career in health and social care.
A clear DBS check is required this will be processed during enrolment.

Assessment

Each unit is assessed by a variety of assignment tasks, both written and practical.
Each unit will be graded PASS, MERIT or DISTINCTION.
In order to gain the full qualification all units must be successfully completed.

Future opportunities

Students who successfully complete this programme will be able to apply to universities offering diplomas and degree courses in Health and Social Care, particularly Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedics and other related areas or employment.
