Construction and the Built Environment Extended Diploma Level 3 at Southport College

Course description

The construction industry contributes around £100 billion to the UK economy and is essential to the development of infrastructure (roads and rail) as well as the creation of public and private buildings, houses and shops. It is an exciting time to join the construction industry with the development of environmentally friendly building practices and technologies.

The Level 3 Construction course opens up many doors for you, including a path to university. Most students who complete the course progress to university. Careers available to students who complete the Level 3 and a subsequent degree include:

Chartered Surveyor
Building Surveyor
Quantity Surveyor
Building Services Engineer
Civil Engineer

Course content

While on the course you will study a variety of units including:
Health, Safety & Welfare
Sustainable construction
Construction in Civil Engineering
Project Management
Further mathematics for construction
Design for Construction

The units will prepare you for a career or further studies at university.

Entry requirements

Minimum 5 GCSEs at A*- C including English and maths or Merit in a related Level 2 Diploma and C or above in English and maths. Satisfactory reference & interview.


Students are continually assessed through a range of modular assignments

Future opportunities

On successful completion of this course student may progress onto university to study areas such as Architecture, Civil Engineering or Construction Management. Students may also pursue an Advanced Apprenticeship with the construction sector.
