Biology A-level at Dixons Allerton Academy

Course description

Biology involves the study of a varying range of exciting topics; these include molecular biology to the study of ecosystems and from microorganisms to humans. Biology is something regularly in the public eye with concepts such as the human genome and the possibilities sequencing this could have on curing disease. Along with all this you will also be learning more about cell biology, biodiversity, classification, disease, medicine, biochemistry, food production and the anatomy of the human body.

Course content

1st Year

  • Biological molecules
  • Cells
  • Organisms exchange substances with their environment
  • Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms

2nd Year

  • Energy transfers in and between organisms
  • Organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments
  • Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems
  • The control of gene expression

Entry requirements

Minimum grade B in Science (Core and Additional), grade 6 in English and 5 in Maths

Assessment

A-level practical skills to be assessed via endorsement:
A minimum of 12 practical activities to be carried out by each scholar which, together, meet the requirements from the prescribed subject content, published by the Department for Education. The required practical activities will be defined by each awarding organisation.
