Automotive Maintenance and Repair Level 2 at Wiltshire College

Course description

The motor vehicle aspects of this course will be taught in the college's workshops and technical classrooms.

The course runs in college for 2-3 days per week.

This course is for those students who either have successfully completed the Diploma in Automotive Maintenance and Repair Level 1 course or those who have the required GCSE grades. All students following this course will need to also take a Maths and English course unless they have a GCSE at Grade C or above.

Course content

This course will provide students with the underpinning knowledge and skills required to work in the motor trade.


The course consists of eight units:

  • Health and Safety
  • Working with others
  • Materials and Fabrication
  • Routine Servicing
  • Remove and Refit engine components
  • Remove and Refit chassis components
  • Remove and Refit electrical components
  • Remove and Refit transmission components

Optional units

Students that complete all the mandatory qualification outlined above may have the choice to complete extra units

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grade C or above, including English Language and Maths 

or City and Guilds Certificate in Automotive Maintenance and Repair Level 1

Future opportunities

Educational Progression

Students who have completed the Level 2 Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair can apply to follow the BTEC Extended Diploma Level 3 with a view to studying at a Higher Education level.

Employment opportunities

After successful completion of the course, students will have a real opportunity to move into the motor trade as an apprentice.

This qualification is identical to the qualification gained on an apprenticeship and will allow students to make this move should they be successful in gaining a place in a garage.
