Art & Design Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma at Wigan & Leigh College

Course description

This creative course will help you explore all areas of Art and Design. It will build on your previous experience and develop your creative skills in a full range of art and design subjects, such as fine art, 3D Design, textiles and illustrative elements.

Course content

In the first year you cover a wide selection of areas in the visual arts, to give you a good overall level of skills, particularly the ability to draw. You have lessons in visual studies and the history of art & design, plus fine art, 3D, textiles, life class and visual studies for example. In the second year you specialise in one of areas of 3D, Textiles or Fine Art. The course structure can allow the qualification to be flexible to meet learners interests, abilities and aspirations. There are five compulsory core units plus a choice of units from a range of professional specialist areas. These units will allow you to build a professional portfolio of work.

Entry requirements


A minimum of 5 A*-C/ 9-4 GCSE subjects or equivalent including maths or English and an art related subject. Students will need to present a portfolio of work


Work is assignment based and is assessed throughout the course. A range of methods are used including live projects set by 'clients'. You are encouraged to evaluate your own progress through tutorials.

Further information

You will have an opportunity to go on visit, London, Europe, and Galleries; recent trips have included Barcelona and Venice. Student are expected to have an art kit with basic essentials. Some specialist materials are provided. Students will take part in work experience and work related learning activities.
