Fine Art AS & A Level at Durham Sixth Form Centre

Course description

Students opting to follow Fine Art are introduced to a variety of experiences through a wide range of media, processes and techniques.

Course content

Students will explore a range of Art and Design skills, using different methods and media in a variety of ways. They will explore drawing in new and challenging ways. Students will be required to work in one or more areas of Fine Art and can explore overlapping areas and combinations of areas. At AS-level, students study themes of their own choice whilst following set briefs that develop their skills, knowledge and understanding of Fine Art. Students will use a wide range of drawing, painting and printing techniques including: 

  • oil painting
  • print making
  • mixed media
  • sculpture
  • installation
  • photography

Entry requirements

There are a range of courses and pathways available to you at Durham Sixth Form Centre depending on your GCSE results and academic profile. In order to enrol with us as a student, you must have the minimum of 5 A*-C GCSE grades (or equivalent). In addition, individual subjects have specific entry requirements, which will be discussed with you during the application and enrolment process. Students who do not achieve a grade C or above (or numerical equivalent) in GCSE English and/or mathematics will be required to continue studying these subjects at Durham Sixth Form Centre.

Assessment

Components 1 and 2 at A2-level build upon the skills learnt at AS-level. Students develop their own personalised design brief which includes a 1000-3000 word, illustrated personal investigation.

Financial information

The Art department regularly organises trips to galleries and museums. Recently, Art students across the department visited London for four days. They enjoyed a street art tour of the East End and a spray painting workshop. As well as seeing several contemporary exhibitions, students also saw two West End shows.

    • Durham Sixth Form Centre is located in Durham City Centre next to Gala Square and Freeman’s Quay. We are a couple of minutes walk from both the bus station and the railway station. Our students enjoy having all of the city centre facilities, shops, restaurants, the city library, cinema and theatre on our doorstep. In the city itself, students find a host of lively cultural, social and educational advantages and facilities. The galleries, exhibitions, museums and book shops all play their part in enriching the student experience. A large public car-park is directly opposite and adjacent to Durham Sixth Form Centre’s main entrance.
