Introduction to Hospitality & Catering Level 1 at Bromley College of Further & Higher Education

Course description

This course is designed to provide a route into catering for students aged 16+ who have not achieved formal qualification grades or need learning support to achieve their goals.

This is a one year programme to introduce students to the vocational field of catering. There will be the opportunity to achieve a full certificate which will include credits in catering, food service, functional skills and work skills. Trips and experiences outside of the College environment are provided to enrich your hospitality and catering knowledge.

Depending upon your achievement, you may have the opportunity to progress on to a higher level course at our NEW Hospitality, Food & Enterprise Career College.

Course content

Course units include:

  • Introduction to hospitality industry
  • Customer service in the hospitality industry
  • Food Safety
  • Introduction to food commodities
  • Basic food preparation
  • Basic cooking
  • Introduction to food service
  • Preparing for an interview
  • Working in a team

Plus Functional Skills in English, maths and IT.

 

Entry requirements

Assessment in Entry Level 3 English and Entry Level 3 maths.

Assessment

Assessment is continuous and consists of collating material for a portfolio, observation of practical skills, successful completion of 3 functional skills exams.

The course team will review students’ progress formally three times a year in relation to the course aims and their individual development targets.

Financial information

Additional Costs:

Contributions to educational visits and course activities. 

Students are expected to provide basic uniform specification for Chefs whites and basic food service uniform  for practical sessions and pen and paper.

There will be an additional cost for professional uniforms both for the kitchen and the front of house embroidered with the Bromley College logo and student’s name.

In the kitchens students will wear chef’s whites with blue check trousers, skull cap, neckerchief and aprons.

When working front of house students will wear black uniforms including a waistcoat and tie.

Together with safety shoes and personal professional knife set this will total in the region of £240.00.*
