Chemistry at Swanwick Hall School

Course description


Unit 1: Foundation Chemistry (atomic structure, bonding, the Periodic Table, basic Organic Chemistry)

Unit 2: Chemistry in Action (Reaction rates, halogens, extraction of metals, further Organic chemistry)

Unit 3: Investigative and Practical Skills (internally assessed unit of a wide range of practical skills and experimental investigations) An opportunity to represent the school in the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Schools Analyst competition. Lab based activities in a local university.


Unit 4: Kinetics, Equilibria and Organic Chemistry.(Studying the driving forces behind reactions, reversible reactions and more advanced organic reactions including manufacture of explosives plus biology based topics)

Unit 5: Energetics, Redox and Inorganic Chemistry.( Energy changes in reactions, and the chemistry of transition metals)

Unit 6: Investigative and Practical Skills (internally assessed practical work as for AS)

Entry requirements

In order to access this course students must have achieved a minimum of A* - C in 5 different subjects including English and Maths at GCSE Level.
