Biology A Level at Berwick Academy

Course description

The AS course involves the study of topics which will be examined by three written exams lasting a total of three hours. The topics include Cell structure; Biological membranes, Cell division, Cell diversity and cellular organisation, exchange and transport. 

Students will also demonstrate their practical skills throughout the course which is reported separately to the exam board. The AS Biology course is examined in June and if taken cannot be topped up to A Level. 

Entry requirements

GCSE all Sciences at Grade B (Double/Triple)

Assessment

The A Level course adds to the AS Biology studies and will be examined by two written papers lasting a total of six hours. Topics studied include Communication and homeostasis, Excretion, Neuronal communication, Hormonal communication, Plant and animal responses, Photosynthesis, Respiration, Cellular control and inheritance, Manipulating genomes, Cloning and biotechnology, Eco-systems, Populations and sustainability. 

Students will also have to demonstrate their practical skills throughout the course which is reported separately to the exam board. The A2 Biology course is examined at the end of the two years.
