Applied Science A-Level at Churchill Academy and Sixth Form
The Applied Science A Level offers an exciting blend of theory and practical tasks that will be tested through a combination of written exams and portfolio work. Research, Communication, Problem Solving and Teamwork are important aspects throughout the course.
Key Concepts in Science - Cell structure, the heart and respiration, Atomic structure and enthalpy and efficiency and electricity.
Applied Experimental Techniques (practical assignment) - Students will carry out a number of practical based experiments across the three science subjects building on skills acquired in GCSE and improving practical techniques.
Science in the Modern World - This unit aims to enable learners to analyse and evaluate scientific information, to develop critical thinking skills and to understand the use of media to communicate scientific ideas and theories.
Human Body - Topics include the digestive system, balanced diets and the effects of imbalances of diet on health. Also covered is the musculoskeletal system as well as oxygen transport and the nervous system.
Investigating Science (Practical Portfolio)- Students are given the opportunity to undertake the role of a research scientist, following standard procedures to complete a scientific investigation.
Optional Unit (Portfolio Practical assessment) - This develops research and communication skills in a practical setting, producing a written report relating to a series of experiments in Biology, Chemisty or Physics.
