Course description

About the syllabus:

The aims of the Biology syllabus are to encourage students to:

• develop their interest in and enthusiasm for Biology, including developing an interest in further study and careers in Biology;

• appreciate how society makes decisions about scientific issues and how the Sciences contribute to the success of the economy and society;

• develop and demonstrate a deeper appreciation of the skills, knowledge and understanding of How Science Works;

• develop essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of Biology and how they relate to each other;

Biology complements a broad spectrum of other subjects: Geography, Chemistry, Art, Psychology and Physical Education to name a few.

It is a key subject for those embarking on careers in Medicine, Veterinary Science, Architecture, Sports Science, Geology, the Environment, and Dentistry. At its broadest level, Biology is a subject that will hone valuable research and investigative skills.

Biology students need sound organisation and time management skills and will be expected to work well with others. Biologists need to be able to communicate their ideas and present, at times, to the rest of the class. Your skills in IT and some maths skills will be called upon.
