Course description

This course is an ideal starting point for an IT industry career - specialising in Cyber Security.

Course content

“Business Insider UK” magazine reports that there has been nearly 300 million records leaked and over $1 billion stolen in 2015 - chances are you or someone you know has been affected by a cyber attack.

The Computing Department understands the effects of cyber attacks on business and the need to train future IT professionals with skills to combat such threats. As such we are pleased to offer this Level 3 IT course in Cyber Security.

If the answer to these questions is yes then this could be the course for you.

This course is for students who are interested in developing general IT expertise as well as studying the causes and prevention of cyber crime. The course will enable you to build your experience within a variety of computing topics and develop theoretical knowledge as well as a range of practical skills.

The BTEC National Extended Diploma is a Level 3 course equivalent to 3 A-Levels. With this qualification you can progress to a Degree or HND course in Computing or a related field. It may also help those, on completion of the course, enter employment directly.

There are 18 units for this Diploma covering a broad range of computer applications and processes but the emphasis will be towards Cyber Security, and will include:-
- Employability Skills for IT
- Computer Systems
- Information Systems
- Managing Computer Networks
- Organisational System Security
- Mathematics for IT
- Communication Technologies
- Network System Security

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at Grade 'C/4' or above including English and Mathematics
or
A Merit at Level 2 First Diploma and Level 1 Functional Skills in English and Mathematics.

As well as the successful completion of the Induction Process.

Assessment

You will be continually assessed by unit assignments. Although there are no external examinations, at present, a small portion of the units may be assessed by internal tests.

Future opportunities

Many students will progress to higher education or enter employment.

For the BTEC National Extended Diploma you will be assessed continually by unit assignments.

These are externally moderated by the examining body.

This course leads to a vocational qualification recognised and respected by employers and universities. The lecturing team has built up good employer links within the sector; as well as contacts with the local universities and uses this knowledge and expertise to make the course relevant to your needs as you progress either into Higher Education or employment.

Additionally if you have not yet achieved grade C/4 in GCSE English or Mathematics you will be required to attempt grade improvement following suitable tuition during the first year.

Study trips are included to reinforce and enhance your learning experience.
How much will this course cost?
Not Applicable to 16-18 year olds.

Is there anything else I will have to pay for in order to do this course?
You need to bring a pen, notebooks and folders to every lesson. It is expected that you will bring a memory stick to save and back up your work.
