Course description

If you are fascinated by Mathematics and are considering studying Maths or engineering at university, Further Mathematics is the subject for you. 

It is a combination of pure maths mechanics and decision maths.

Further Maths enables you to explore Mathematics in greater depth and breadth and work with more complex problems and ideas which will satisfy and challenge you. Having A-Level Further Mathematics will be looked on favourably for all Mathematical and Scientific degree courses and will help for those looking to take STEP Mathematics. 

We look at the topic of differential equations which can be used in many ways, one of which is the predator/ prey model.

Course content


Pure Mathematics: complex numbers, matrices and how to use them. You combine this with additional applied maths units. 


Pure Mathematics: polar curves, calculus, complex numbers, matrices and hyperbolic functions. 
Differential Equations: When people describe Mathematics as the language of Science this is the area they are talking about. This topic forms the basis for all mathematical modelling in the real world.

You combine this with an additional unit from Statistics.

Entry requirements

BBCCC at GCSE including English Language and an A*/A in GCSE Mathematics. You must also be studying AS or A2 Mathematics.


AS Level

Three 1½ hour examinations 

A2 Level

Three 1½ hour written examinations
