Creative Digital Media Production First Extended Certificate - BTEC - Level 2 at Crawley College

Course description

You’ll extend your skill base in professional techniques such as animation and editing by working on ‘live’ projects that you’ll research, plan and present. You’ll be assessed on your knowledge of industry sectors and audiences, and your ability to pitch for a live brief.

The Level 2 BTEC in Creative Digital Media Production is a vocational programme, with a strong work related emphasis. It offers practical units combined with an extensive range of teaching and learning methods that enhance the learners’ self -confidence, skill base and improve employability.  You will use professional software packages such as Final Cut Pro, Microsoft Office and Photoshop. Learn by doing work based projects where you are required to research, plan and present a ‘live’ project along with studying subjects such as ‘Photography’, ‘Digital Moving Image’ and ‘Animation’ to improve your knowledge and professionalism in various areas of the media.

In addition to the main qualification you will also be expected to study GCSE in Maths and English.

The course is made up of 9 units. There are external examination units, ‘Sectors and Audiences’ and ‘Industry’ and a further core unit ‘Planning and Pitching’. Other units are chosen from a range to suit the needs of the learners. These might include:

  • Digital Moving Image
  • Photography
  • Animation
  • Video Editing

These are assessed via presentations, assignments and time constrained examinations.

Entry requirements

A minimum of four GCSEs at grade D including English or maths. You may also have completed the Level 1 programme in Creative Media Production.


Assessment will be mainly through project and assignment work but there is an external examination as part of this qualification.

Financial information

16-18 year olds will not have to pay tuition fees, awarding body registration or exam fees. However they are required to pay for other third party costs, such as books, equipment and educational trips/visits.

Students aged over 19 on the 31st August in the year in which they start their studies, have to pay tuition fees. In addition they are expected to pay awarding body registration and exam fees, other third party costs, such as books, equipment and educational trips/visits.

Some students may be eligible for a fee concession, although in most cases some element of the fees will have to be paid.

Future opportunities

Students who successfully complete this course will have the opportunity to progress straight into employment or they could consider progressing on to the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in creative Media Production at our Crawley campus, or use it to progress onto A Levels at the Haywards Heath campus.

Students wishing to take up an A Level programme will have to achieve a MERIT in the Level 2 and should have successfully passed their resit in Maths and English GCSE.
