Course description

Unit 1 – Acquiring Culture (SY1)

  • Introductory Core. The introductory core will introduce you to the concepts used in sociology. You will start to develop your sociological understanding of how human behaviour is shaped by society.
  • Families and culture. The family is the key agency of primary socialisation and as such is central to our understanding of how culture is transmitted between the generations. We will investigate how the family impacts upon an individual and their life chances and choices they make.

Unit 2 – Understanding Culture (SY2)

  • Research Methods. Research is central to the study of Sociology. We will investigate different types of research method and consider their strengths and weaknesses from a sociological perspective.
  • Education. Education is a major agency of secondary socialisation. We will investigate whether the educational system is fair and how it impacts upon individuals and their lives.

Course content

Minimum of 5 GCSEs grade A*-C, including English Language.
