Barbering Level 2 at Waltham Forest College

Course description

Are you interested in a career in Barbering? Perhaps you already have some of the skills but not the qualification, or maybe you are interested in changing career. This qualification will provide you with the requisite knowledge, understanding and skills to work competently as a Barber.

This course will give you the basic Barbering skills you need in cutting, creating patterns, styling, shaping and shampooing.

You will be supervised by technical staff and assessed on your occupational competence.

Course content

Working within our commercially equipped beauty salons, each student will learn the skills required to gain competence at this level.

These involve practical skills such as:
Advise and consult with clients
Give customers a positive impression of yourself and your organisation
Cut hair using basic barbering techniques
Cut facial hair to shape using basic techniques
Dry and finish men's hair
Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
Create basic patterns in hair
Ensure responsibility for actions to reduce risks to Health and Safety

Assessment

Assessment is concentrated on practical competence. You must be able to demonstrate consistent performance of a commercially acceptable standard of work, combined with written and oral competence in the subject studied.
Continual assessment throughout the course
Written assignments
Written/online tests
Practical assessments are undertaken on paying clients and must be completed in a commercially acceptable timescale
Portfolios of collated study evidence

In addition to timetabled classes there, is provision for independent study time. Students will undertake independent learning, investigation and research and bring this to present and share in subsequent classes.

The Hair and Beauty industry is worth over six billion pounds to the UK economy and is growing. It is a dynamic and creative sector with a wide variety of career opportunities for the enterprising hairdresser; from small, select provincial salons, large city salons, ocean liners, business and enterprise, film, television, training and product development.

Continued studies will enable you to confidently start your own business venture or franchise, while higher education courses could qualify you for teaching or training posts.

      Trains run to Walthamstow Central from Liverpool Street station (a bus can then be taken to the College, see below). Wood Street station is approximately a 10-minute walk from the College.

      Tube:

      The Victoria Line ends at Walthamstow Central, which is approximately a 15-minute walk to the College. Alternatively, you can get a bus, see below.

      Bus:

      From Walthamstow Central:Bus 275 stops outside the College, 212 stops across the road from the College (Shernhall Street). Buses 97, 357, 34 or 215 stop at the 'Bell Corner' (junction of Hoe Street and Forest Road). From here, the College is approximately five-minute walk.

      From Blackhorse Road Tube Station: Bus 123 also stops outside the College on route between Tottenham and Ilford
