Biology A/S at Samuel Lister Academy
Biology is a core requirement for subjects like Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Optometry.
Unit 1 - Biology and Disease
Unit 2 - The variety of Living Organisms
Unit 3 - Practical and Investigative Skills
AS Biology is comprised of three units. Two written papers which are externally assessed and one practical exam which is internally assessed. Unit 1 is assessed in January and June and Unit 2 is assessed in June and contribute 33% and 46% respectively to the overall AS grade. Unit 3 evaluates the students practical skills and contributes 20% to the overall AS assessment. This unit is internally assessed.
Students should achieve a minimum of a B at GCSE level in core science and additional applied science. Other candidtaes not achieving these grades will be considered but at the discretion of the Head of Science. Maths at grade B would be an advantage.
Please see above.
To succeed, students must be self motivated and conduct a large amount of independent study outside of lesson time, for example, Grade a students (grade A is needed for most medical schools) would spend half an hour every evening and 4 hours at the weekend throughout the AS/A2 academic term studying independently. Successful students must achieve a good balance of organisation, discipline, prioritisation, addressing weaknesses, reinforcing work studied, preparation for next lessons, good attendance at classes and most of all effort (hours) in class and at home.
For further information, please contact Mrs. Gogliormella, Head of Science at Aire Valley School.
