Applied Science - BTEC Level 3 at Hanley Castle High School

Course description

BTEC Applied Science is a practical, work-related course equivalent to one A-level. It will give learners an insight into the diverse and wide-ranging world of applied science, including biomedical, forensic, physical and chemical sciences. This sector employs 4.8 million people in the UK, approximately 20% of the workforce. It is an Applied General qualification intended to support students in progressing to higher education or directly into employment. This course helps students develop personal attributes such as communication, ICT and numeracy skills.

Entry requirements

Grade C in at least 1 GCSE science (Core Science / Additional Science / Biology / Chemistry / Physics). Grade 4 in GCSE Mathematics.


The course is assessed partly through internally assessed assignments, and partly by externally set tasks / exam (58% of total marks). You should enjoy and be good at working independently and meeting deadlines, solving problems and researching information from new sources. You will develop general scientific skills and techniques alongside increasing your scientific knowledge. The qualification will have an overall of Pass, Merit or Distinction calculation on the total points achieved from internal and external assessment.

Future opportunities

This qualification carries UCAS points and gives students a base to progress to a degree or Higher Education studies in Applied Biology, Chemistry, or other Applied Sciences, to an apprenticeship or alternatively to enter a career as a technician in many scientific areas. The skills that are developed through this course are highly regarded by HE providers and employers.
