Fitness and Physical Activity CYQ level 1 Award at Barnet and Southgate College

Course description

Post 16 students who want to go onto further study and have an academic or career interest in the health and fitness industry. This course is suitable if you have an interest in the human body and its relation to health and fitness, fitness instructing, leading sessions, designing programmes and nutrition.

Course content

The course will give you exercise and fitness knowledge as well as giving you the practical skills needed to induct clients safely and progressively through a training programme. Areas covered include: Human physiology and anatomy, Components of fitness, Training principles, Exercise screening, Weights exercise techniques, Weights training methods, Cardio respiratory, machines exercise techniques, Health and safety, Emergency first aid, Promoting activity for health and nutrition.

Entry requirements

Applicants are required to have 4 GCSE A-Ds including GCSE English and maths, PE is desirable. Applicants need to have a real interest in the health and fitness industry.


Applicants will be required to complete worksheets in most of the areas identified in 'Areas Covered'. There will be a multiple choice exam on anatomy and physiology and also a practical examination on your ability in the gym. Applicants design a 6 week exercise programme within the LAR.
