Course description

Why study BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Sport? The BTEC National Award in Sport provides you with an understanding of the essential skills needed to build a career in the sports sector. The qualification will give you insight into the various routes you can take, plus help you progress to employment or further education. The course can be adapted to meet your abilities and aspirations, focusing on your areas of interest such as sports coaching, working with children in sport, or outdoor and adventure activities. What topics will I study? You will study three compulsory core units plus a choice of three specialist units: The Body in Action; Health and Safety in Sport and Training and Fitness for Sport. You will also study three additional units including: Sports Coaching, Sports Development, Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise, Practical Team Sports, Outdoor and Adventurous Activities, Sport and Society, Leadership in Sport, Exercise Health and Lifestyle, Working with Children in Sport and work based experience. How will I be assessed? This course is 100% coursework which will be assessed both practically and theoretically. Power Point presentations, self assessment, teacher assessment and video presentations can be used to assess learners.

Entry requirements

GCSE PE at grade B or higher or BTEC First Sport at Merits or higher

Future opportunities

There are a wide variety of careers to explore including fitness instructor, sports coach, sports development officer, pool/beach lifeguard and work in leisure centres. Further vocational and academic qualifications: the BTEC National Award in Sport is equivalent to GCE A Level and it is possible for you to progress further into higher education, as successful BTEC National qualifications give UCAS points for university applications.
