Art & Design UAL Diploma (Creative Media Production Pathway) Level 1 at City College Brighton and Hove

Course description

This is a hands-on course giving you a broad experience in Art & Design. You will be able to express yourself through the use of different materials.

The course aims to provide students with a broad programme of Art & Design studies covering a range of skills including Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, 3D work, Textiles and Fashion. You will also research into different artists and designers, visit museums and galleries and undertake location drawing. You will develop practical skills such as working in sketchbooks, presenting work and building a portfolio.

You will be given the opportunity to develop language and literacy skills through research and writing about your own work and ideas. It will also help you to identify where your strengths and interests lie.

Course content

The Level 1 Diploma in Art & Design comprises of eight mandatory units, of which great emphasis is placed on extending and developing painting and drawing skills, 2D & 3D design skills as well as encouraging research into artists and designers and study skills.

To pass the course all of the identified units must be passed. Work for each unit is undertaken within overall themed projects.

You will participate within projects that may run for a day, a week or a number of weeks. The course will challenge you to step out of your comfort zone & try new things.

In addition to studying Art & Design if you do not have GCSE grade D or above in English or Maths you will study GCSE or Functional Skills English & Maths.

Parental consultation during courses is welcomed and valued. There are a number of parental consultation evenings scheduled throughout the year which provide parents with the opportunity to gain feedback on their son/daughters’ progress made at college. Along with the sense of creative freedom that students enjoy, there is an academic underpinning to the development of skills.

The course is vocationally-focussed with pastoral care, guidance and support helping students who are making the transition from school to college.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grade G or equivalent including a creative subject, or equivalent vocational entry-level qualifications. All applicants must submit a portfolio 
and project work at interview which demonstrates creative skills at a suitable level.


To pass the course all identified units must be passed. An overall grade of Pass, Merit and Distinction is awarded for the final qualification.

Financial information

All full time courses are free to EU residents who are under 19 years old on the 31st August 2016. The only fees you have to pay are for specialist resources and equipment and the cost of these varies from £25 to £300 depending upon the subject you are studying.

Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for financial help from the college's learner support funds. You should apply for financial support as soon as you receive your offer letter.

Future opportunities

A Level 1 Diploma in Art and Design prepares you to go on to a more advanced course such as the Level 2 Diploma in Art and Design or Level 2 Creative Media programme.
