English Literature A Level at Wheatley Park School

Course description

English Literature is the right course for you if:

  • You enjoy reading and writing about prose fiction, poetry and drama from a  range of periods, including your own choices of texts.
  • You enjoy analysing literary texts and forming your own opinions about them.
  • You are interested in exploring how writers create meanings in texts.
  • You are interested in when and how texts were produced and how our own environment influences us in reading and responding to texts.

English Literature A Level can lead to a wide range of career options. Students of English Literature often go on to degree courses in language, literature, media, communications and journalism. Career options after an English Literature or communications degree include publishing, advertising, journalism, public relations, teaching, administration and management, but English Literature graduates enter a wide variety of professions.

In English Literature we study texts through genre-based study. In AS the genre is comedy. This means we study the conventions of comic writing and then study individual texts to see how they can be seen as comic texts.

Course content

At A-level we revisit the comic texts and also study four texts in the crime writing genre. There are two exam papers at the end of year 13.

Entry requirements

The basic entry requirement for Level 3 courses in Wheatley Park Sixth Form is to complete 8 GCSEs or equivalent, including a minimum of grade 4 in five subjects which must include English and Mathematics.
