Politics A Level at The King's School

Course description

Have you ever wondered who makes decisions that affect you? Do you have an interest in current affairs? Do you like to discuss and debate issues? If so, A level Politics could be for you. The subject links well with History, Media, English, Sociology and Geography. We normally offer Politics students the opportunity to visit Parliament as part of the course.

Course content

Unit 1: Government and politics in the UK
Constitution, Parliament, government, power of Prime Minister and cabinet, Supreme Court, devolution in UK,
Growth UK democracy, pressure groups, rights in UK, elections and voting behaviour, electoral systems and Referendums, Parties and EU
 
Unit 2: Political ideas
Liberalism, Conservatism, Socialism and Nationalism
 
Unit 3: Government and Politics of the USA
Constitution, Congress, president,
Supreme Court, US parties, elections, interest groups, comparisons with UK and civil rights
 
 

Entry requirements

The minimum grade entry requirement is 5 GCSEs at Grade 4 or above to include Grade 4 or better in English and Maths. Grade 4 in GCSE English Language or a Grade 4 in History.
