Chemistry at Uplands Community College School Sixth Form

Course description

The different units cover chemical principles that are drawn from modern applications of Chemistry in industry, everyday life and the environment.  Students will recognise the value of Chemistry to society and how it may be used responsibly.


A Level Chemistry complements the study of Biology, Physics, Maths and Geography.

Course content

Students will undertake practical work, investigative work and problem solving tasks during lessons.  There is both independent and group work employed as appropriate as we cover various aspects of the A Level syllabus.

Entry requirements

5 A* to C grades at GCSE including grade B or above in Chemistry.  Students also need grade B or above in Mathematics.

Future opportunities

Students who have recently studied Chemistry at Uplands have gone on to study Medicine, Veterinary Science, Accountancy, Chemistry, Radiology, Forensic Science, Disaster Management, Media Sport Science, Law, Psychology and History.  They have gone on to work in Television, the City, Accountancy, Medicine, Chemical Industry, Education; the list is endless. 


The skills gained from studying Chemistry can be transferred to any other subject and are highly valued by both Universities and Employers.

    • Wadhurst is situated on the Kent/Sussex border seven miles (11 km) east of Crowborough and about seven miles (11 km) south of Tunbridge Wells.  It is also within easy reach of Ticehurst, Burwash, Mayfield and Heathfield in East Sussex, and Lamberhurst, Hawkhurst and Cranbrook in Kent.


      There is limited parking available on the College site during the day.  Visitors travelling by car may prefer to park in the public car park, which is situated next to the Greyhound Pub in the High Street, adjacent to the College. 


      Uplands is a Community College and we have a Sports Centre on-site, which is open to the public and a Youth Centre across the road.  The entire College site, including the Sports Centre is a non-smoking environment. 

      The College is:

      • Within easy reach of the A21


      • Approximately 1 mile from Wadhurst Railway Station


      • Served by bus routes from the surrounding towns/villages


      • Located within the centre of Wadhurst; Sixth Form students are permitted to visit the local shops during study periods and break/lunchtime
